Activism Then and Now

  • The Grotto, Hillwood Commons, LIU Post 720 Northern Boulevard Greenvale, NY, 11548 United States (map)

The political actions and fight for civil rights in the 1960s and 1970s are legendary for galvanizing thousands of Americans, many of them young, to speak up and speak out for equal rights and government accountability. Writers and journalists Zebulon Miletsky and Ken Fireman discuss their research into and personal experience with this period, considering the tactics of the past and the context of present-day struggles for equality. Miletsky’s Before Busing chronicles Black activists who fought school segregation, while Fireman’s novel The Unmooring recounts the heady protests against the Vietnam War.
